Art of ThunderCats (1985)

ThunderCats is an animation series created by Rankin-Bass Animated Entertainment and Leisure Concepts, and directed by Katsuhito Akiyama, Arthur Rankin, Jr. and Jules Bass in 1985. The story was based on the characters created by Tobin "Ted" Wolf. The show was produced, written and voice acted in the United States, but was animated in Japan by the Pacific Animation Corporation, the working name for a collective of Japanese studios, part of which in 1989 formed Walt Disney Animation (Japan) Inc. as well as Topcraft (which would later form Studio Ghibli).

The series was originally distributed by Rankin-Bass Productions' then parent company Telepictures Corporation, which would later merge with Lorimar Productions in February 1986. In January 1989, Lorimar-Telepictures was purchased by and folded into Warner Bros., whose television syndication arm would eventually assume distribution of the show; Warner Bros. has owned the rights to the series (and all Lorimar Telepictures programming) from that point on.

The pictures on this page are a collection of artworks created for this series.

The Thunderians are fleeing their dying homeworld, when suddenly their fleet is attacked by the Mutants of Plun-Darr, who destroy most of their starships, but spare the flagship hoping to capture the legendary mystic Sword of Omens they believe is on board. The sword holds the Eye of Thundera, the source of the ThunderCats's power, which is embedded in the hilt..
